CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - John Pellegrino Jr., age 90, and formerly of Brasher Falls, and resident of United Helpers, Canton, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Church of the Sacred Heart. The family will receive friends starting at 9:00 A.M. prior to the Mass. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Manahawkin, NJ.
John was born on August 10, 1929 in Massena the son of the late John and Adeline
"Lena" (DeRosa) Pellegrino. He graduated from Massena High School and attended college at the University of Virginia and St. Lawrence University where he received his teaching degree in science. He taught science in Islip, Long Island, High School and Massena Jr. High School retiring to New Jersey with his wife where they resided for 17 years.
He returned to the North Country after her death. He was a member of the New York State United teachers Association and served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He married Kathleen (Kay) Ryan on June 27, 1967 at St. Joseph’s Church in Babylon, Long Island. She predeceased him on August 12, 2003.
His most enjoyable pursuits were in gardening fulfilling his academic interest in the field of botany, another enjoyable hobby was his interest in all aspects of fancy poultry as a member of the Northern NY Poultry Fanciers with headquarters in Madrid.
John is survived by a sister Beatrice Reynolds of Massena; three nieces Julie Hoag of Brasher Falls, NY; Barbara and Tony Zappia of Massena, Suzanne Stratton of Massena, NY along with nephews; Tim Hoag of Brasher Falls, NY, Michael Hoag of Brasher Falls, NY, David Pellegrino of Seminole, FL, Vincent Pellegrino of Missouri, and Thomas Pellegrino of Marietta, GA, He was predeceased by a brother Vincent and a sister Joan Hoag.
