Saturday Sports: Red & Black looking for playoff spot

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - In Empire Football League action from the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds Saturday night, the Watertown Red and Black closed out their regular season as they hosted Mohawk Valley. A win by the Red and Black combined with a Plattsburgh loss would put Watertown in position to host a playoff game in 2 weeks.

In the 3rd quarter the game was tied at 14 when Connor Brown came up with an interception and he goes 82 yards for a touchdown, putting the Red and Black go on top 21-14. The Red and Black defense came up big when Elijah Coleman recorded a quarterback sack.

In the 4th quarter, Mohawk Valley goes for it on 4th down and Coleman comes up with another sack. That sets up a touchdown pass from Jared Hendricks to Trey Smith. Score: 27-14 Watertown. Watertown takes the win with a final score of 27-20.

In Section 3 football from Beaver Falls, Beaver River hosted Sauquoit Valley in Class D play. In the 1st quarter, there was no score when quarterback Sam Bush scrambled and took the ball in from 6 yards out putting the Beavers on top 6-0.

In the 2nd quarter, Sauquoit takes the lead when Colby Jones connects with Jaron English in the back of the endzone. Sauquoit Valley goes on top 8-6. Late in the 2nd, Jones was hit and coughs up the ball. Garrett Johnson recovers for the beavers. That sets up a touchdown pass from Bush to Zac Lacomb: 14-8 Beaver River at the half. Beaver River continues on to win 27-8.

In Section 10 football action from Massena, the Red Raiders hosted Potsdam. Will Varney put Potsdam on top 6-0. And Varney does it again from 4 yards out. Score: 14-0.

Then it was Zach Kirka to William Roda for 10 yard touchdown. Varney finds a hole up the middle and goes 20 yards for a touchdown. Score: 30-0.

Ethan Miller got Massena on the board with an 11 yard touchdown run but it wouldn't be enough as Potsdam won 30-8.

On the soccer field, a Frontier League-N.A.C. matchup in Carthage as the Comets hosted Harrisville.

In the 2nd half, the game was tied at 1 when Matt Allen dented the back of the net on a penalty kick putting Harrisville up 2-1. Late in the 2nd half, Carthage tied it up when Jalen Johnson sneaks one past the goalie, knotting the score at 2. The game’s final 2-2 in overtime.

On the girls’ side, another Frontier League-N.A.C. matchup. This one at Watertown High School as the Lady Cyclones hosted Potsdam. Less than 6 minutes in, Watertown gets on the board when Tatum Overton dented the back of the net, putting the Lady Cyclones on top 1-0. That would be the final.

In women's college soccer from Canton, St. Lawrence hosted SUNY Oswego. In the 1st half, St. Lawrence got on the board when Erin O'Brien split the pipes. Score: 1-0 Lady Saints.

In the 2nd half , Tori Daley dented the back of the net, increasing the St. Lawrence lead to 2-0. Julia Mulhern sealed it burying the penalty kick for the final: 3-0 St. Lawrence.
