Wednesday morning sports wrap

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Watertown girls' cross country team recorded a sweep against Indian River Tuesday.

Emma Morris and Ella Valentine led the ladies to victory with teammates Miah Hernandez, Aliza Sovie, and Halley Robbins rounding out the top 5.

Watertown boys also defeated Indian River. The Cyclones were led by senior David Clarkson with a time of 19:48.

Norwood-Norfolk hosted Gouverneur and Ogdensburg in the first meets of regular season cross country in the Northern Athletic Conference.

On the boys' side, the Flyers swept Gouverneur 20-41 and OFA 15-50, while Gouverneur beat the Blue Devils 15-50.

Top runner for the meet was Gouverneur's Cole Siebels, setting the pace at 18:14 -- 38 seconds better than the rest of the field.

Norwood-Norfolk sealed the team victory by capturing 7 of the next 8 finishes.

Clayton Reed finished second at 18:52, followed by Levi Sochia and Layton Colbert. In the battle for fifth place, Mike Richards edged teammate Owen Haas by just a 10th of a second at the tape.

On the girls' side, Norwood-Norfolk edged Gouverneur 26-29, with both the Flyers and Wildcats beating Ogdensburg 15-50.

Norwood-Norfolk's Maddie Dineen ran a nearly flawless race on her home turf, finishing the meet at 19:54, a full 2 minutes, 37 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack.

Teammate Sharon Colbert placed second at 21:31 -- 24 seconds ahead of Gouverneur sisters Rikki and Randi Griffith. Norwood-Norfolk's Rachel Hewey rounded out the top 5.

In another boys' cross country meet, Potsdam defeated Malone by 1 point in a tie-breaker. That hands the Huskies their first boys' loss in 10 seasons.

In girls’ soccer, Lowville and Immaculate Heart were tied at 1 at the end of the first half. Lowville scored 5 goals in the second half to beat IHC 6-1.
