WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - A 36 year old man, who was accused of trying to have sex with an 11 year old girl on Fort Drum, took a plea deal in Jefferson County Court Tuesday.
Joseph Thomas pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted rape.
He faces 2 years in prison and 3 years post-release supervision when he's sentenced December 2. He will be required to register as a sex offender.
According to court documents, Thomas used the mobile messaging app KIK to chat with a girl who told him she was 11 years old. It turns out the girl was actually an undercover police officer.
In his statement to state police, Thomas claimed he knew the person he was chatting with was setting him up.
In the statement, he admitted to having a sexually explicit conversation with the person before agreeing to meet at a home on Fort Drum.
Thomas, in his statement, said he exited his vehicle, started walking toward the home, saying, "Are you ready to get me in trouble," and "Where are the cameras?"
State police, which had been conducting the undercover sting, arrested him.
The incident happened in the town of LeRay in September 2018.
