WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Watertown Fairgrounds exhibition hall is the place for boxing fans Saturday night.
It's the 11th annual Carmen Basilio Quest for Champions, a boxing event named after one of the all-time greats.
"It's kind of neat because yesterday, September 23rd was the 62nd anniversary of Carmen Basilio beating Sugar Ray Robinson at Yankee Stadium for the middleweight title," said the Watertown Area Boxing Club's Johnny Pepe.
"It's kind of neat to have that history and to respect Carmen, to honor him at the 11th annual Quest for Champions Saturday night."
It should be a fun-filled, action-packed night at the Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall.
"I've probably got 8 to 10 bouts, I've got people coming from Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Vermont and a few places in Canada," Pepe said. "I'm very happy with the turnout as far as the clubs are going."
Pepe says there will be a special guest, ex-champion Bonnie "Queen B" Mann.
"She's going to bring her belt up and she's actually inducted in the Marine Boxing Hall of Fame," Pepe said. "It will be a pleasure to have her come up and share the night with us."
Pepe says he's looking forward to a great show. "We have a a lot of guys from the WABC boxing and some Fort Drum soldiers competing, some juniors and seniors and different divisions -- it gets bigger and better every year.
