Saturday Sports: Mohawk Valley over Red & Black in Semifinals

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Empire Football League semifinals took place Saturday night at the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds as the Watertown Red and Black hosted Mohawk Valley with a trip to the championship game on the line next weekend.

In the 1st quarter, Red and Black were down 7-0 when Jarrod Hendricks hit Keegan Queior for the touchdown. The Red and Black were down 7-6 after 1 quarter.

In the 3rd quarter, the score now 27-6 Mohawk Valley. Hendricks connected with Queior for his 2nd touchdown of the game. Score: 27-14 Mohawk Valley.

The Red and Black defense came up big as Elijah Coleman recovered a fumble for Watertown and the Red and Black capitalize as Hendricks and Queior hook up for their 3rd touchdown of the game, putting the Red and Black within 7. Score: 27-20.

Mohawk Valley would score on their next possession to go up 34-20. Mohawk Valley wins 34-28.

In Section 3 football from Beaver Falls, Beaver River hosted Sandy Creek in a Class D contest. In the1st series, the Beavers got on the board when Nathaniel Erker took it in from 2 yards out. Score: 7- 0 Beavers. The Beavers looked to add to their lead, but Sam Bush's pass was picked off in the endzone.

The Comets defense was keeping the Beavers in check. Austin King came up with a sack of Bush.

The Beavers were looking to add to their lead but Bush was picked off once again. This time by Maddox Brown. In the final play of the 1st half, Bush connected with Noah Zehr for the touchdown. Score: 15-0 Beavers at the half. Beaver River beat Sandy Creek 29-12.

In college football from Canton, St. Lawrence hosted Hartwick. In the1st quarter, Jamie Battaglia went in from 2 yards out. Score: 7-0 St. Lawrence.

Early in the 2nd, it was Battaglia again. This time from 8 yards out. The Saints up their lead to 14-0. Just before halftime, it was Tyler Grochot to Andrew Murphy for a 32 yard touchdown. Score: 23-0 Saints at the half.

In the 4th quarter, Jack Buis took it in from 11 yards out. Final score: 33-0 Saints.

Turning to the soccer field, the Larries of St. Lawrence Central hosted St. Regis Falls. The Larries opened the scoring with Hayden Perkins denting twine. Sean Hornung and Cayden Taylor both scored on penalty kicks.

Goalie Thomas Storrin needed to make just two saves, as St. Lawrence Central downed St. Regis Falls 3-0.

In men's college soccer, SUNY Potsdam hosted SUNY Fredonia. Jackson Retzer's redirect found the mark, putting SUNY Fredonia up 1-0.

It was Retzer with his 2nd goal of the game, this one on a penalty kick. Score: 2-0 SUNY Fredonia. Chad Gilson put SUNY Fredonia on top 3-0.

In another men’s college soccer contest at J.C.C., the Cannoneers hosted Clinton Community College. This game was scoreless for most of the game, but J.C.C. would get a pair of late goals from Jeff Lloyd. Lowville graduate, Andrew McLean would come up with the shutout in goal as J.C.C. blanks Clinton 2-0.
