WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - On January 1, cash bail will be eliminated for most misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses.
Cash bail and detention will still be allowed in some cases, including sex crimes, witness intimidation, and domestic violence-related charges.
The reason for the change: lawmakers thought it punished the poor, who would have to stay in jail until their trial because they can't afford bail.
Lewis County Sheriff Mike Carpinelli appeared on 7 News at Noon on Monday and said the law was “ill conceived.” Watch his interview with anchor Diane Rutherford above.
