FORT DRUM, N.Y. (WWNY) - This fall, more than 3,000 soldiers will deploy from Fort Drum and there’s a way for people to build a connection with them.
It's called the Adopt a 10th Mountain Platoon Program.
People taking part are assigned to sponsor a specific platoon.
Sponsors send packages to their soldiers throughout their deployment.
Someone from the platoon keeps in touch with their sponsor during this period.
Program Manager Michael Plummer says just the act of sending something goes a long way for soldiers.
"To a soldier to know that somebody back home, besides their family, really cares about what they're doing and appreciates their sacrifice and service, is a readiness exponent you can never get enough of," he said.
Sponsors are typically invited to their platoon's Welcome Home Ceremony when they return.
