POTSDAM, N.Y. (WWNY) - An 11 year old girl, who was on her way to school, was killed in a crash in the town of Potsdam Friday morning.
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office identifies her as Rachel Raleigh of Waddington.
Detectives said her cousin, 19 year old Benjamin Cochrane of Waddington, was driving her to school when the crash happened shortly before 7 a.m. at the intersection of State Route 345 and County Route 35.
According to officials, a vehicle driven by 24 year old Brendan Palmer of Potsdam failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the passenger side door of Cochrane’s vehicle. Cochrane’s vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest in a field.
Palmer was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Officials said Cochrane suffered fractures and a head injury and was taken to the same hospital.
Raleigh was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and charges against Palmer are pending, officials said.
According to Potsdam Central School District Superintendent Joann Chambers, Raleigh was a 6th grade student at A.A. Kingston Middle School.
Chambers said counseling is being offered to students and staff.
