UTICA, N.Y. (WWNY) - So, let’s say you cross the U.S.-Canada border illegally. What do you do next?
Apparently one answer is, call for a rideshare like Uber or Lyft.
We know this because of a guilty plea Friday in federal court in Utica, in which Jaswinder Singh, 30, of Philadelphia, PA., pleaded guilty to “knowingly transporting illegal aliens within the United States for the purpose of financial gain.”
That’s according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Syracuse, which says Singh worked as a driver for a rideshare company - the press release didn’t say which one - and in May picked up two aliens who had “recently crossed into the United States from Canada illegally a few miles from the border in St. Lawrence County.”
The aliens paid Singh $2,200 after he picked them up. Singh also admitted that he transported several other aliens in exchange for money between January 1, 2019 and May 20, 2019. It’s not clear how the aliens contacted Singh, whether through the rideshare company or some other means.
The maximum sentence Singh faces is 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. He’ll be sentenced February 13, 2020.
