Work to start on Thompson Park pool, bathhouse
WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Work will start Monday on the long-awaited Thompson Park pool and bathhouse project, two city council members confirmed Saturday.
City council members Cody Horbacz and Lisa Ruggiero told 7 News they were notified by city staff that contractors are expected on site Monday to map out the project, and that ground will likely be broken Friday.
Horbacz and Ruggiero said that if things go as planned, the pool should be open sometime during the month of July, next summer.
The general contractor for the project is Con Tech Building Systems of Gouverneur. City council is expected to vote Monday night on spending $157,000 with C & S Engineers, based in Syracuse, to oversee the project along with city engineering staff.
Construction of the pool has been controversial, especially after the price tag increased; in August, Horbacz, Ruggiero and Ryan Henry-Wilkinson were the narrow majority who voted to dip into the city’s savings to help pay for the $3.1 million project.
Saturday, Ruggiero emphasized the project is now on track, with all the contractors in place, and she cautioned against any attempt to reverse or halt the project when a new city council is seated in January.
