Saturday Sports: Close win allows Gouverneur win streak to continue

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Gouverneur wildcats were looking to remain undefeated Saturday afternoon at home as they hosted the Potsdam Sandstoners in Section 10 football. The Wildcats were coming off a big road win last week at O.F.A. and were looking to keep that momentum going.

This game goes to 2 overtimes. In the 2nd overtime, Will Varney took it in to put Potsdam up 14-8.

The Wildcats answered with Caleb Farr on the keeper, pushing the pile on a great individual effort, he takes it to the house, tying the game at 14. Backup kicker Kyle Savage was on for the extra point to win it and he hits it as Gouverneur beat Potsdam 15-14 in double overtime.

In Canton, the Golden Bears hosted Massena in Section 10 play. The Raiders’ Ty Page finds the end zone to put Canton up 8-6. Ashton Cloce answered for the Golden Bears, Canton on top 14-6. Conner Ramsey scored 4 touchdowns on the day as Canton beat Massena 40-22.

In Liberty League Football from Canton, St. Lawrence hosted Ithaca. Tyler Grochot hit Joseph Viscardo for the 14 yard touchdown. Score: 6-0 Saints. But the Bombers would score the next 47 points in this one for a final tally of 59-20 and it would turn into a long afternoon for the Saints as they fall to 2-3 on the season.

Turning to the soccer field, a Frontier League-N.A.C. battle in Adams as the South Jeff Lady Spartans hosted Hermon DeKalb. A little over 6 minutes in, South Jeff gets on the board when Maci Schultz dented the back of the net. Later in the 1st half, Jackie Piddock goes far corner for the tally, increasing the South Jeff lead to 2-0.

Four minutes later, Piddock rings one off the post and in for her 2nd goal of the game. Score: 3-0 South Jeff. South Jeff goes on to blank Hermon DeKalb 8-0.

On the boys' side, a Frontier League battle in Belleville as the Panthers looked to remain undefeated as they hosted Sackets Harbor. The game was scoreless in the 1st half when Brandon Bast ripped yarn, putting the Panthers on top 1-0.

Jeremy McGrath would record the shutout between the pipes for the Panthers as Belleville Henderson blanked Sackets Harbor 4-0.

In men's college soccer from the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds, J.C.C. hosted Mohawk Valley. In the1st half, Mohawk Valley was on the attack, but former Lowville product and J.C.C. goalie, Andrew McLean comes up with the save.

Mohawk Valley gets on the board via a penalty kick as Zach Gleasman connects. Score: 1-0 Mohawk Valley. Mohawk Valley goes on to win 4-0.
