CARDINAL, Ontario, N.Y. (WWNY) - One tug boat has arrived at a freighter grounded near Galup Island in the St. Lawrence River and a second is expected to arrive Thursday afternoon.

Longtime ship watcher Michael Folsom reports on Twitter that the tug Ocean Comeau arrived at the Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin Thursday morning and a second, Ocean Echo II passed Valleyfield, Quebec around 8 a.m. on its way to the stuck vessel.

Folsom reported Wednesday that barges were also on their way. It's typical to offload cargo from grounded ships to help them float free.

The vessel ran aground Sunday evening on the Canadian side of Galup Island near Cardinal, Ontario. The island is opposite Red Mills in the town of Lisbon.

Seaway traffic has been allowed past the stranded Canadian-registered ship while officials investigate the grounding and determine a plan for freeing it.

Folsom says he expects shipping to be halted while the ship is being offloaded.
