SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. (WWNY) - North country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik was in Sackets Harbor Wednesday to tell farmers that she’s working to help push though a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada.

The trade deal would give U.S. farmers better access to the Canadian dairy market.

Stefanik spoke during the annual Jefferson County Farm Bureau business meeting, where farmers were able to vote on policy resolutions for the state and national Farm Bureau.

"There's a lot of distractions of a lot of different issues happening in Washington," Stefanik said, "but we need to stand up for our farmers, stand up for trade access of our agricultural products."

"As farmers, we are eternally hopeful for a good growing season and better markets and everything else," county Farm Bureau president Devon Shelmidine said. "Hopefully, we'll get to the bottom of some of these trade disputes and get some more certainty in things, you know, take out some of the highs and lows and get in a more comfortable place. "

Milk prices have slowly started to tick upwards, something Stefanik says is a step in the right direction.
