SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. (WWNY) - North country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is among Republican lawmakers critical of President Donald Trump's decision to pull troops out of Syria.

"I did not support the administration's decision," she said. "I think it was misguided and I think very detrimental to our national security.

"I think this is a case where Congress should act and there may be potential sanctions on Turkey because of their operations today."

Trump decided to order American troops to step aside in northeastern Syria, clearing the way for Turkish armed forces to cross the border into Kurdish territory.

Turkey has long considered Syrian Kurds to be terrorists aligned with Kurdish factions inside Turkey.

Kurdish forces in Syria have been the United States' staunchest ally in the fight against ISIS terrorists.

Turkish forces crossed the border into Syria and began attacking Kurdish positions on Wednesday.

The congresswoman was in Sackets Harbor Wednesday for the annual Jefferson County Farm Bureau business meeting.
