TOWN OF CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - What could be the largest solar farm in the north country is planned for Canton.

EDF Renewables wants to spread solar panels over 1,500 acres of land.

The panels would go on either side of Route 11 south of the village.

The town board heard about it Wednesday night.

The attraction is open farm land and high voltage transmission lines. The solar farm would be capable of producing 240 megawatts - enough to power 70,000 homes.

"We anticipate to create approximately 200 good paying, prevailing wage construction jobs that will last about 12 to 18 months during the construction phase," said Jack Honor, EDF Renewables development manager. "We're happy to be working on this project. It's going to bring a significant amount of invesment to the north country where it's desperately needed."

The company plans to spend $240 million on the project. Construction would begin in 2023.
