Home saved when firefighters put out garage fire

TOWN OF RUTLAND, N.Y. (WWNY) - Volunteer firefighters saved a town of Rutland home Saturday morning, after fire engulfed a garage next to the home.

The fire at 23701 Perrigo Road broke out around 6 AM. Five fire departments were called to battle the blaze, which destroyed the garage but which firefighters were able to knock down before it spread to the house, which is attached by a breezeway.

Felts Mills fire chief Stephen Heeren said the fire took about an hour to put out.

“We arrived on scene, found a lot of fire in back of the garage,” Heeren said. “We quickly were able to save the house by doing an aggressive attack by pushing the fire back through the garage and putting it out.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the resident of the home suspects old wiring is to blame.
