West Carthage man going to prison for robbing bank

ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WWNY) - A 71 year old serial bank robber, who had been living in West Carthage, is going back to prison.

Walter Parker was sentenced Tuesday in Oneida County Court to 10 years in prison and 5 years post release parole.

A hearing was set for December 3 to discuss the amount of restitution Parker will owe.

Parker pleaded guilty in August to a felony count of second-degree robbery.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department said on May 8 Parker went from West Carthage to Oriskany Falls where he robbed Berkshire Bank on Main Street.

They said he left behind clothing and DNA on that clothing helped lead them to Parker.

Parker lived at Dalton Estates in West Carthage. He was arrested down the street at a coffee shop where he worked about two weeks after the Berkshire Bank robbery.

According to federal court papers, in 2004 Parker was found guilty of committing four bank robberies in Madison, Cortland, Broome and Thompkins counties.

The documents said he displayed what appeared to be a handgun in two of those robberies.

He was sentenced to almost 11 years in federal prison. Federal records said he was released from prison in December 2013.
