Saturday Sports: Post-season action in Section 3 & Section 10

BEAVER FALLS, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Section 3 football playoffs continued Saturday with a Class D first round battle in Beaver Falls involving two Frontier League teams as the Beaver River Beavers hosted the Thousand Islands Vikings. The Beavers without starting quarterback Sam Bush, who was injured in last week’s loss to Dolgeville.

In the 1st quarter, the Vikings strike first when Connor McKay hit Dylan Azone who goes 59 yards for the touchdown. The extra point was no good. Vikings on top 6-0.

In the 2nd quarter, the Beavers take the lead as Jonah Mullin connected with Dalton Finster who breaks free and goes 89 yards for the touchdown. Beaver River goes on top 7-6. T.I. looked to answer but McKay is picked off by the Beavers' Noah Zehr. That sets up a 2 yard touchdown pass from Mullin to Cameron Murphy. The Beavers expanded their lead to 14-6.

T.I. was looking to tie it up, but McKay was hit by Garrett Johnson and Chase Cardinal comes up with the pick. Final score: 14-6 Beaver River.

There was another Class D semifinal from Dolgeville as the Sandy Creek Comets battled the top seed. In the 2nd quarter, Kyle Getman found paydirt from a couple of yards out. Score: 14-0 Dolgeville.

The Comets look like they get on the board on the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter when Adam Hilton appears to take it in for 6, but the officials say he stepped out of bounds before scoring.

Getman and top seed Dolgeville would prove to be too much in this one as Dolgeville blanks Sandy Creek 30-0.

In college football from Canton, the 2-4 Saints hosted 4-2 R.P.I. in Liberty League play. Tyler Burns took the kick and takes it 80 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the R.P.I. 3 yard line. That set up a move from Tyler Grochot to Joe Viscardo for a 3 yard touchdown connection. Score: 35-0 Saints in the 4th.

R.P.I. would make this one interesting, scoring 3 touchdowns in the final 10 minutes of the game. St. LAwrence still comes out ahead, winning 35-21.

The girls' swim teams of the Frontier League held it's league championships Saturday at Thousand Islands. The best swimmers the Frontier League has to offer were on display.

The first event of the day, the 200 medley relay: Watertown set a meet record with the team of Jasmine Ferguson, McKenzie Way, Sarah Kilburn and Emily Alvarado. Lowville placed second.

The next event, the 200 freestyle. Mallory Peters of Watertown wins it with Shelby Law of Lowville second and Natalie Monnat of Beaver River 3rd.

One of the toughest events, the 200 individual medley: Jasmine Ferguson of Watertown set a school and meet record by taking first, Meridith Lovenduski of Lowville is second with Julie Urf of watertown 3rd.

In the fastest event, the 50 freestyle, Sarah Kilburn of Watertown wins it with Emily Alvarado of Watertown second and Emma Purvis of South Jefferson third. Kilburn with a meet record.

In the 100 butterfly, Jasmine Ferguson of Watertown wins it with Kaylen Walsh of South Lewis second and Tori Wilcox of Indian River third.

In the 100 freestyle, Sarah Kilburn of Watertown adds to her win earlier in the 50 freestyle. Emma Purvis of South Jefferson second with Emily Alvarado of Watertown third.

The toughest event, the 500 freestyle, 12-year-old Ana Burns showed why she's the class of the race, McKenzie Way of Watertown placed second. Watertown goes on to win the team title.

In the Section 3 Class B girls' soccer playoffs, South Jeff met C.V.A. One goal would decide this game. C.V.A.'s Reill Rich scored with one second left on the clock and C.V.A. beat the Lady Spartans by a final score of 1-0.

In the girls' Section 10 Class D soccer playoffs, Morristown was at Lisbon. Hailey Ward puts Morristown up 1-0.

Lisbon's Kallie Wood would tie the game up with a tally in the 52nd minute. This game would go to penalty kicks and Wood scores the game winner in a 3-2 shootout. Lisbon moves on to face Edwards Knox in the quarterfinals.

In the girls' Section 10 Class D soccer playoffs, Hermon DeKalb played host to St. Regis Falls. Kaitlyn Arcadi shot inside the opposite post to cut the Green Demons lead to 2-1. That would be your final.

In the boys' Section 10 Class D soccer playoffs, Hermon DeKalb entertained St. Regis Falls. Peyton Hamilton dents net for Hermon DeKalb, tying the game at 1.

Then it was Hamilton scoring on a penalty kick. The Green Demons go on top 2-1. Keyvin Joj goes opposite corner to increase the Green Demons lead to 3-1. Hermon DeKalb beat St. Regis Falls 4-1.

In Federal Hockey League action from the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds, the Watertown Wolves hosted Mentor for a 2nd straight night. In the 2nd period, the Wolves were up 1-0 when Deric Boudreau dented the back of the net. Score: 2-0 Wolves after the second period. Watertown goes on to beat Mentor 3-1.
