Sunday Sports: Carthage, Gouverneur football advance

DEXTER, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Carthage Comets punched their ticket to the Section 3 Class A Championship on Friday night, beating Whitesboro 48-28 at General Brown.

Nick Cavallier and Fombo Azah paced the Comets offense as they each scored three touchdowns in the win.

Last year, the Comets fell in the Class A title game at the Carrier Dome to the Indian River Warriors 33-21.

Carthage is looking to add the post season championship to their regular season crown and take care of some unfinished business and advance to state play.

"Sectional championships don't just, they don't give them out to just anybody, and you know, to say that's your goal is really, it's not in me," said Jason Coffman, Carthage's coach, "You know, our goal is to play as good as we can. You know, hopefully win a Class A Championship, which we did, and you know, hopefully have a chance to be in the game and win a championship in the dome now. You know, we put ourselves in that situation to play in that game now the kids get to go out and play."

"Honestly, it's been something we've expected all season but we knew that we were gonna have to work hard to get back there and that's what we did," said running back Fombo Azah.

The Gouverneur Wildcats completed an undefeated Section 10 season Saturday by beating the O.F.A. Blue Devils 25-6 in the Section 10 Class C Championship game.

The Wildcats will meet Saranac Lake from Section 7 in the opening round of the states this week.

Cayden Stowell scored twice and Caleb Farr and Joe Cummings added touchdowns in the win.

Getting contributions from different players each week has been a key to the Wildcats success in 2019.

"Well, part of our philosophy, and you know it's no surprise to anybody, is that we use a multi-headed force to try to win football games. It's not just one guy, it's not just one lineman so that's our approach going into any season. Who's gonna be the next guy to step up and fill that spot that the guy previously did a great job at but is no longer here," said Wildcats Coach Sean Devlin.

The Girls' Section 10 Swimming Championships took place at SUNY Potsdam Sunday.

The Canton Lady Bears completed a season-long sweep against Section 10 opponents for their 104th consecutive win.

Canton posted 287 points, following by a strong challenge from Malone at 254. St. Lawrence Central was third at 194, following by Gouverneur, Massena, and Potsdam.

The Golden Bears captured two of the three relays, and won six of the gold-metal positions, among the eleven total events.

Canton's Julia Domena won the 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and 100 breaststroke. Emily Wentworth topped the 50 freestyle, Isabella Jaskowski bested the 100 backstroke and Grace O'Neill won the 100 freestyle.

St. Lawrence Central was led by Emily Lantry who won the 500 free and the 200 individual medley.
