WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Jefferson Community College basketball team opens its 2019-2020 schedule Tuesday night when they travel to Genesee Community College.

The Cannoneers will be looking to improve on a 7-20 mark last season that saw them go 5-6 in conference play.

This season's Cannoneers are a young group with just four returning players from last year.

Coach Joe Vaadi says he likes what he sees from his team heading into the season.

"I definitely think the team is looking a lot better this year," he said. "We're stronger defensively, we have a great work ethic, and they're just playing well together in the scrimmages that we've had."

"Really, all around I think we're a great team, JCC center and South Lewis grad Joshua Newman said. "We're not too weak or too strong in one place, just a great team all around."

"We seem very focused, we've got a big team goal -- we want to win the Midstate," said Jacob Hess, a guard who graduated from South Jefferson. "Just a lot of good guys this year -- we've got good bigs, good guards. "

“So far we’re looking good, we’ve had a couple of scrimmages, getting better each time we come out and play,” guard and General Brown grad Kyle Nichols said. “We’re all working hard in practice, trying to get better everyday, and we’re all excited for our first game Tuesday.”
