WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The Watertown football team defeated Canton on Saturday to win the Section X Class A title.
The win capped the Cyclones' first year back in Section X, which turned out to be classified as a success.
"It was great being able to finish the season winning a championship, to be able to finish the season with a 5-3 record," coach Kyle LaLonde said. "It was really a great season, I'm really proud of the kids, I'm happy for the community -- overall it was a great season, it was a real fun season and we're looking forward to getting back to work as far as next year."
The key is building up rivalries in Section X.
“It was a lot of fun to be playing back in Section X, we built some great rivalries, we played two great games with Canton,” LaLonde said. “We’re looking forward to playing them again next year -- we’re really excited for next season already.”
Next year looks good for the Cyclones, although they do lose some players to graduation.
“We had nine seniors this year, so we’ll lose a couple of linemen that were starters and we’ll lose Jayden Ramsey as a running back, but we have some good kids coming up from JV and we had a lot of kids playing different positions, we have a really good group of kids coming back.” LaLonde said. “We’re going to miss those seniors, but we have a good group coming back -- we have a good group coming up and we’re excited to see what kind of a team we put on the field next year, too.”
