Update: deputies identify Morley fatal crash victim

Fatal crash

MORLEY, N.Y. (WWNY) - St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies say a Canton man died when he crashed his pickup on the Morley-Potsdam Road early Wednesday.

Deputies identified the man as 27 year old Jeffrey Hyde, who lives on that road.

His black Dodge pickup truck was heading northwest not far from Sykes Road when it went off the left shoulder, struck several trees, overturned several times, and came to rest on its roof in a swamp.

“It is a fatality investigation,” Sheriff Kevin Wells told 7 News reporter Keith Benman before the victim’s identity was released, “and one vehicle, one male in his 20s.”

The call came in at 5:30 a.m.

"Early morning call of a vehicle into the water, into this swampy area right here," Wells said, "and sheriff's patrols and emergency services personnel all responded."

The sheriff said rescue crews were able to retrieve the body from the wrecked truck.

"It's still fairly deep, it's cold and so they have the proper equipment to get it done," he said.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.

An autopsy will be conducted later Wednesday.

Deputies were assisted by Morley Fire and First Responders, Canton Fire and Rescue, and state police.
