MASSENA, N.Y. (WWNY) - Voters in the town of Massena have overwhelmingly decided to hand over the financially struggling Massena Memorial to St. Lawrence Health System.

A yes vote injects millions of dollars into the hospital, which it will need if it wants to survive.

As a publicly owned hospital, it has been hemorrhaging cash.

More than 90 percent of voters approved transferring the hospital, which has been managed by St. Lawrence Health System since May.

In July, Massena Memorial announced it had a deal to be purchased by St. Lawrence Health System. That deal was subject to voter and state approval.
