GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWNY) - On Saturday the Gouverneur Wildcats punched their ticket to the state Class C football playoffs by beating OFA 25-6 in the Section X Class C championship game, completing an undefeated season in Section X play...
For the Wildcats, it was the completion of a mission.
Last year the Blue Devils ended the Wildcats' perfect season in the Section X Class C title game by beating Gouverneur 28-0 and denying the Wildcats a trip to the states.
"It is a very gratifying feeling, our seniors remember what it felt like a year ago to not win that football game at home and that was kind of our motivation to really get the job done this year," coach Sean Devlin said. "They're excited about what has happened in the past, but they understand we're not in the past anymore, now we have to move on and continue to work as hard as we can to get to where we want to be."
Next up for the Wildcats is a state Class C first-round game with Section 7 champ Saranac Lake at OFA.
"It's definitely been a short week and, like, short notice, but we've done that all season and it's been -- seemed to work -- and they're definitely a stud team," Wildcats running back Cayden Stowell said. "Looking forward to playing against them and just curious to see how they match up against us.
"They're a physical team, they got a lot of good people," quarterback Caleb Farr said. "They're gonna be -- it's gonna be a good game."
"We've been watching a lot of film, but it's hard to tell how good they are, 'cause we haven't seen them in a while, so it's going to be a good game," fullback Jacob Shippee said.
Devlin says the key to coming away with a victory is simple...
"We have to stop them," he said. "In order to win the football game, we have to stop them and give our offense a chance to score."
Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ogdensburg Free Academy.
