WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Five area high school teams remain alive after this weekend with hopes for a State Championship. Four on the football field and one team on the soccer field.
On the football field, the Carthage Comets advanced to state play on Friday night with a 55-7 win over Auburn in the Section 3 Class A Championship at the Carrier Dome. The Comets move on to the State Class A Regionals where they will meet Union Endicott on Friday night a 8 PM at Vestal High School.
On Saturday, the Lowville Red Raiders advanced to state play as well, beating Cato Meridian 41-6 at the Carrier Dome to capture the Section 3 Class C Championship. The Red Raiders will now meet Susquehanna Valley in State Class C Regional play on Saturday at noon at Vestal High School.
Up north, two Section 10 football teams will be playing in state regionals this week as well.
The Potsdam Sandstoners shut out Beekmantown 30-0 on Friday night in the State Class B Subregionals. The Sandstoners now advance to the Class B Regionals, where they will face Schuylerville at Massena High School on Friday night at 7 PM.
In Class C, the Gouverneur Wildcats moved on to the Class C Regionals after beating Saranac Lake 60-20 at Ogdensburg Free Academy. Next up for the Wildcats, a Class C Regional game versus Stillwater on Friday night at 7 PM at Mohonasen High School.
On the soccer field, the Hammond girls are the lone team left on the pitch.
Hammond blanked Chazy 1-0 on Saturday and punched their ticket to the State Class D final four, where they will face Avoca in the State Semifinals at Homer High School on Saturday at 12:30 with a trip to the State Class D Title game on the line.
