2 escape as fire destroys home in town of Antwerp

TOWN OF ANTWERP, N.Y. (WWNY) - Two people fled their burning home late Tuesday morning.

Volunteers from 10 departments were called to 35201 County Route 194 in the town of Antwerp shortly before noon.

Jefferson County property records show the home, built in 1880, is owned by Philip Pickert.

County Deputy Fire Coordinator George Turner said two people and a pet dog were home when the blaze broke out and that they escaped without injury.

He said the blaze apparently started in an empty room in the back of the house and wind pushed the flames into the rest of the home.

Turner said volunteers were unable to battle the blaze from the inside because the fire made the structure unsound. He added there were explosions at the home too because of ammunition inside.

The people who lived in the home will be staying with family, Turner said.
