Hats off to a grandma who makes sure kids have a hat to put on

LaFargeville woman knits hats to keep children warm

LAFARGEVILLE, N.Y. (WWNY) - There's nothing warmer than grandma's love.

96 year old Winnie Daughen has been crocheting since she was young. Her motto is simple.

“It's the responsibility of everyone to help other people,” Daughen said.

Daughen helps others by making hats; thousands of them.

“Well, I make hats for boys and girls and children that perhaps don't have them,” she said.

Monday, Daughen decided to send several hundred hats to the Watertown Urban Mission.

“They stopped by my door and said we have some hats for you,” said Urban Mission critical need coordinator Amy Canniff. “They brought the boxes and kept bringing them in. They didn't tell me they had 655 hats.”

Since Monday, two hundred people have already received Daughen's made-with-love hats.

Aalyha Thomas chose one made with blue, sparkling yarn.

“It's glittery. It's my favorite color,” Thomas said.

Daughen says the most important aspect of giving, is to never expect to receive anything back. Making sure children are a little warmer this season is all the thanks she needs.

“All times of the year it's cold for children and you see them on the streets running around with an old hat on or without a hat,” she said. “If I can help that or make somebody a little happier, make a smile on their face...(laughs).”

Daughen plans to continue warming the community with her hats and her love.
