CARTHAGE, N.Y. (WWNY) - This year has been a breakout one for Carthage running back Fombo Azah. He has certainly opened many eyes with his ball-carrying ability.
Azah has been a man possessed this season, earning the first 7 News Athlete of the Week award this school year.
He has carried the ball 247 times for 2,444 yards. He has recorded 38 rushing touchdowns and 2 kickoff returns for TDs.
It's been a magical season for number 32.
"The season's gone pretty well for all of us, but for me personally, I'm very grateful for the season," he said. "I couldn't have asked for anything better, really, made it to the state finals -- we worked hard for it, we got what we worked for, so I'm just very grateful."
“To say surprised, I don’t think would be the right word because we all knew how talented Fombo was, even with another running back ahead of him a year ago,” offensive coordinator Bill Escodera said. “I remember when I was at the JV level and had him, you could tell there was something special about him, just based on what we needed a few years ago, he got moved up as a sophomore, more defensively, what we needed him for a few years ago.”
Escodera said “unfortunately, I lost the opportunity to coach him his second year at JV to see what he could do. For me, it’s just really rewarding that this is happening for him -- he doesn’t need all the attention, but he’s deserving of it -- he’s worked really hard and he’s such a great kid to coach, it’s been fantastic for him to have this season.”
Win or lose in the state Class A final, Azah has helped to lead his team to new heights this season.
