Winter Sports Preview: South Jeff girls basketball
ADAMS, N.Y. (WWNY) - On Friday, the 2019 fall sports season wrapped up. Which means the winter sports season will kick off in full force this week on the hardwood.
One team that made it to the state final four last season was the South Jeff Lady Spartans who will be looking for a return trip this season.
The South Jeff Lady Spartans came up one game short of playing for a state championship last season, losing to Irvington 42-39 in the State Class B Semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College.
That loss, while heartbreaking, was motivation for Coach Michelle Whitley’s team heading into this season.
“These guys put some time in in the off season and we’re hoping to start off, you know, strong and working hard and trying to go one step at a time, you know, one goal at a time. And obviously getting back to the states would be awesome, but there’s a lot of unaccomplised goals that we need to do before that can even happen,” said Coach Michelle Whitley.
The Lady Spartans return 4 of their 5 starters from last years final 4 team, with center Alyssa Stevenson graduating.
With a solid nucleus back, the Lady Spartans feel this year’s group can equal, if not exceed, what last year’s team accomplished.
“This year, we got a couple of young kids coming up who are athletes and very quick which is different from what we had last year, but definitely something we’re gonna play to this year," said South Jeff forward, Abby Piddock.
“This year, I think we’re definitely gonna be a pretty quick team. We got a lot of athletes who are not only quick, but know the game of basketball, and we’re gonna try to use that to speed up the game a little bit in our favor.=,” said South Jeff guard, Megan Whitley.
“Yeah, we definitely have more athletes, a lot quicker of a team. So to say to just getting up and down the court, trying to set the pace and set the tempo and try not let teams keep up with us,” said Jackie Piddock.
Look for South Jeff to once again be atop the Frontier League standings and poised to make another run at a State Title in Class B this season.
