wwny Robinson rape and sexual abuse trial underway in St. Lawrence County Court

CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - Lawrence Robinson is on trial on charges of sexual abuse and rape in St. Lawrence County. The prosecution says it’s about a violent man doing horrible acts. The defense says it’s about the credibility of the accusers.

Robinson took notes and listened carefully as the prosecution painted a picture of monstrous acts against two teen girls. It's alleged Robinson raped one.

“The next thing she knew, the defendant was sitting on her legs. She heard him unbuckle his belt,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney Jason Marx.

Marx went on to describe for the jury the rape he alleges Robinson inflicted in the summer of 2016 on a 15-year-old girl.

“This is a case about abusive control against vulnerable kids,” said Marx.

Robinson is also accused of two counts of sexual abuse against the same girl. He is additionally accused of two counts of sexual abuse against a girl even younger. Both will testify. Defense lawyer Peter Dumas kept his opening statement to the jury short.

“What you've just heard, it sounds horrible," he said. "You promised us that you can be fair in this case. Even after listening to what they've said.”

He said jurors will have to listen closely to the two alleged victims when they testify. And then make up their minds.

“You've got to decide for yourselves what's credible and what's not. You can't let someone decide for you,” said Dumas.

This trial is expected to continue into next week. If convicted on any one of the counts, Robinson could face a stiff prison sentence. If convicted on all the counts, he could spend the rest of his life there.

Robinson was arrested one year ago. In April, the five count indictment was handed up. Since then, lawyers have wrangled over what evidence can be used at trial.
