CONSTABLEVILLE, N.Y. (WWNY) - Constableville fire officials say they are part-way to getting a very important piece of equipment.

The volunteer fire department has received a $1,500 grant to help pay for an industrial washing machine called a gear extractor.

According the fire officials, the machine helps remove toxic chemicals and carcinogens from firefighters' turnout gear.

One machine can cost upwards of $9,000, so the fire department will have to raise the rest of the funds.

"This means a big deal," Jennifer Maracchion said. "Right now we wash our gear after we battle structure fires and we haul them to a neighboring agency, and to be able to have it here to be able to wash it here while we are already here on work nights would be a huge benefit."

Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 438, Constable, N.Y. 13325.
