POTSDAM, N.Y. (WWNY) - A veteran fire chief rushed to a fire at a neighbor’s home in Potsdam Thursday and died.

West Stockholm fire chief Robert White’s death was later ruled a natural cause by the St. Lawrence County coroner.

White reportedly collapsed outside the home that caught fire on Route 11B in Potsdam Thursday night. He was later pronounced dead at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

St. Lawrence County coroner June Wood says an autopsy was conducted Friday night. Wood says the death was ruled a natural cause.

Friends and family are called to gather at the Garner Funeral Service in Potsdam on Tuesday, December 10 from 2 until 6 p.m.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 11, at Hosmer Hall on SUNY Potsdam’s campus at 11 a.m.

White was 65 years old.

The St. Lawrence County sheriff’s department says the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
