WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Santa Claus came to town early! Not by sleigh, but rather by shopping cart.
Watertown Urban Mission directors are wondering who dropped off three cartloads of Christmas stockings.
"We were having a meeting here in our community room, and when we came out, we were surprised by this huge donation of stockings stuffed with all sorts of goodies for children," said Watertown Urban Mission Executive Director Dawn Cole.
The donation couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Especially now, the need is great. I’m getting more calls every day from moms and dads who are concerned that their children aren’t going to have what they need for Christmas, so it’s huge,” said Amy Canniff, the mission’s critical needs coordinator.
You can tell the Secret Santa spent a lot of time on the stockings. Most of them are hand-made and the gifts inside are organized for children by age and gender.
"The time and effort it took to make the stockings and choose just the right things to go in each stocking and to recognize that there's a difference for a boy who's 6 and a boy who's 12, it was just a really remarkable gift," said Canniff.
Mission directors are hoping whoever made this donation will give them a call to get a proper thank you.
"The holidays are particularly challenging for families who live in poverty and this is going to make a lot of children very happy this Christmas," said Cole.
The stockings and many other gifts will be distributed at “Christmas at the Mission” next week.
