GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWNY) - Gouverneur Elementary School is closed Thursday and Friday, and, no, it’s not for snow.

Officials with Gouverneur Central School District say there was an infestation this week of what appears to be cockroaches.

Spraying was done Wednesday evening.

Director of Facilities Harold Simmons says the reason for the closure is to make sure all pests are gone.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Donna Runner says staying closed Thursday and Friday is only a precaution.

"We're monitoring to make sure there aren't any more that we catch. They put glue traps out with bait on them. And, we're just making sure there's no more in the rooms," said

"The district's first priority is always the health and safety of our students. So, out of an abundance of caution, we decided to close the building in order to monitor the situation," said Runner.

Runner says the elementary school should reopen Monday. The middle and high schools weren’t affected and remained open.
