McDonald’s plans return to Canton

CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - You may someday be able to buy a Big Mac again in Canton. McDonald's has plans to return to the village after a four-year absence.

McDonald's has submitted plans to build at the Price Chopper Plaza.

“I hear that consistently, and I've heard that over the past four years: 'When is McDonald's coming back,'” said Michael Dalton, Canton mayor.

The McDonald's downtown closed four years ago due to lack of a drive-through. Since, village officials haven't let McDonald's forget them.

“We've expressed interest to McDonald's repeatedly over those four years that we'd like to see them back here,” said Dalton.

McDonald's wants to build right next to Mountain Mart. It would have a double drive-through. Community leaders say the plans represent a vote of confidence in Canton.

“It's extremely encouraging to existing businesses owners as well as people that are contemplating possibly whether or not they would like to start a business here in Canton,” said Tammy Mackin, Canton Chamber of Commerce executive director.

County planners green-lighted the project Thursday with some conditions. The village planning board now has the final word.

As far as what will happen with the old McDonald's building in the heart of downtown, no one's quite sure.

Ideas have been floated to use the space as part of a municipal building revamp. There are also hopes the property could benefit from SUNY Canton’s plan to open a business incubator nearby.
