WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Two Jefferson County churches are getting into the spirit of giving with Christmas less than two weeks away.
It was a celebration of giving at the Tabernacle of Worship on Saturday. Members of the Watertown church donated more than 100 toys to be given away to people in the neighborhood.
Assistant Pastor Celia Colon pulled double duty making balloon animals. She says the toy giveaway is the first step in being a bigger part of the community.
“We don’t want to be a church in the building. We want to be a church out of the building. We want to enjoy the diversity. We want to love everybody and make this city better,” said Colon.
To improve the city, they’re working to give its citizens a happy holiday.
“This time of the season is so hard for people sometimes to get something under the tree. So, we want to give back. We want them to have something under the tree,” said Colon.
At the Rock Church in Watertown, volunteers were getting gift baskets ready for the elderly.
“We always forget about the elderly. So, this is the time where we can think about them and show them that they’re not forgotten, and that they’re loved,” said Myron Jamerson, the Rock Church Senior Pastor.
Senior Pastor Myron Jamerson says people give church officials the names of elderly people to donate. So far the church has just under 200 baskets ready to give out. Baskets children added a little Christmas spirit to.
Some shared their favorite part about the ornaments they made.
These things and the sparkles that are cute. This one has like gold and then the reindeers, snowmen, and then that ribbon,” said Noan and Yeshua Jamerson.
So, no matter their age, if someone is need, members of these local churches are making sure their season is bright.
