CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - They're not fooling around at SUNY Canton with this new major.
It's Esports Management. How to create events, direct people, marketing – basically running an industry. Esports, competetive video gaming against others, is expected to be a $1.8 billion industry by 2022.
It complements the college's Game Design and Development program.
Canton is the only school in SUNY offering Esports Management. The college's video gaming offerings are attracting students.
"It was more of a dream to be able to do it actually. But coming here made me realize that I wanted to further pursue that dream," said Alec Knowles, SUNY Canton sophomore.
"This major will prepare students not only to be in Esports management, but to be in management – in many different walks of life. Because they will be learning accounting and finance and marketing," said Philip Neisser, dean of School of Business and Liberal Arts.
The school also has varsity level Esports teams. They compete against about 40 other schools in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, or ECAC.
