RUTLAND, N.Y. (WWNY) - Firefighters were called to the scene of a garage fire on Andrews Road in the town of Rutland Monday morning.

They were dispatched around 9 a.m. and spent more than an hour bringing the blaze under control.

Destroyed was a garage that was connected to another.

Fire officials say at least one of the owners was inside the garage and escaped the fire.

The cause is under investigation. A nearby home was not damaged.

"It was a purely defensive attack from the time we got on scene. Most of our effort was exterior to the structure. We did have to use quite a bit of water. There was equipment and machinery in the garage - fuel and other petroleum products, which made it a little bit difficult," said Will Kalin, Rutland fire chief.

Rutland fire officials say the property owner is Timothy Percy. Rutland was helped by fire departments from West Carthage, Copenhagen, Black River and town of Watertown.
