MASSENA, N.Y. (WWNY) - The big bass tourneys are months away – but they’ve already caught another big one in Massena – a major fishing expo.
They're saying it will be the launch pad for pro fishing come summer. A fishing expo next month at the St. Lawrence Centre mall.
“These pros have been coming here for a few years and now the secret is out about Massena,” said Daniel Kenney, Massena Fishing Expo promoter.
The expo should have about 100 vendors. Pros will give classes. There will be trout fishing and archery for kids. It's the latest event to piggy-back on the region's new-found fame.
“Specifically the St. Lawrence River was named by Bassmaster the No. 1 fishing destination in the country. That’s huge,” said Kenney.
Local dealers like Blevins Seaway Marine and RV have stepped up as vendors and sponsors.
“We want to get our awareness in the community out there a little bit more to let people know that we do have a good brand of fishing boats...We're glad to hop on board,” said
Cody Blevins, Blevins Seaway Marina and RV general manager.
This year, there will be three major pro bass fishing tournaments in St. Lawrence County. The newest will be the Fishing League Worldwide title championship in August in Massena.
“There's all this interest now in Massena. And by having this expo here it gives us a chance to really launch this movement,” said Donald Meissner, Massena fishing director.
This expo isn't just a big deal for fishing in the region. It will also be a big deal for the mall. It will be the first-ever event held in its new 70,000 square-foot exposition center.
The mall’s new sports bar will be dishing out food and beverage by then. There will be a Pirates of Colonial America exhibit. It’s all part of the mall’s drive to be an events and entertainment center.
