“You can bet on almost any sport that's playing right now, Including soccer, we have boxing, fighting, car racing,” said Todd Papineau, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort general manager.
New York voters approved sports betting in 2013. But not until last year could the state's gaming commission approve rules. Now, Akwesasne Mohawk and others are betting on sports betting.
“This is a great way to ring in 21 years of gaming in Akwesasne with a new way to gamble,” said Papineau.
Most of the sports gaming action will take place at the new Sticks Sports Book and Grill. The food and drink are done up right there. And betting can be done at the kiosks.
For those who need a little help placing bets, there's also a wagering window. With a soft opening the past few weeks, they're already seeing a coveted demographic come into the casino.
“You're talking the 18 to 40 year old males are really interested in sports, watching sports, and placing wagers on sports makes it even that much more exciting,” said Papineau.
The grand opening for Sticks Sports Book and Grill is Friday at 4 p.m. Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver and Hall of Famer Andre Reed will be on hand to help with the festivities.
