GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (WWNY) - State police are investigating a death in the village of Gouverneur.

Troopers said it happened at 135 Rowley Street, but didn’t release any other information as of early Monday evening.

Police said there is no threat to public safety.

7 News reporter Keith Benman, who spent much of Monday on the scene, said the death was reported at 3 a.m. through a call to 911.

He said there was a heavy police presence. A state police forensic investigation unit, a drone and officials in white hazmat suits were observed at the scene.

St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary Pasqua said the probe is into the death of one person, but wouldn’t confirm if it’s a criminal investigation.

According to neighbors, the family who lives in the home keeps to itself. Many of them couldn’t remember the family’s last name even though the family has lived in the home for years.

Young people told Benman they rarely saw the family’s 2 girls outside of school.

Neighbors also said the girls lived in the home with their mother and their father was rarely home.

We’ll update this story when we get more information.
