WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Watertown city staff are looking into a plan that could make the most of its current hydro-power contract.
The plan would install a mini-hydro turbine either at the existing hydro-plant or at the city’s water treatment facility.
The smaller turbine can generate electricity with less water flow than the city’s main turbines, which could help bring in more revenue.
“If we’re able to utilize a unit, a smaller unit, during lower flows, say like 300 or 400 (cubic feet per second),” city engineer Michael Delaney said, “then we’re still generating a revenue, when we would not normally be generating revenue.”
The city now has to determine if installing the unit is worth the cost.
