MASSENA, N.Y. (WWNY) - Joseph L. Verville, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday evening (Nov. 26, 2020) at CVPH in Plattsburgh, NY. As per his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday December 4, 2020 at the Louisville Community Cemetery with full military honors. Joe was born on March 3, 1940 in Massena, the son of the late Joseph A. and Ernestine (LaPierre) Verville. He attended Salmon River School, worked on his family’s farm in Fort Covington, worked at his brother’s florist shop in Massena and enlisted into the United States Army in 1959.

Joe served his country proudly, and was awarded the Mechanic Badge for his outstanding performance of duty while stationed in Korea and Fort Bliss, TX during his four years in the U.S. Army and two years in U.S Army Reserves. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

On September 14, 1963 he married Beatrice Favreau at the Church of The Sacred Heart. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

Joe began his career at Alcoa in June 1963 and retired in 1993 as a shift supervisor after 30 years. He made many lifelong friends while at Alcoa and to this day maintained friendships with several coworkers over the years. Always willing to lend a hand, Joe was a “Jack of all Trades” and enjoyed puttering in his shop, mowing his lawn excessively, and snow blowing his entire yard. Most people who knew him always made sure to honk and wave as they drove past his house while he was relaxing in his rocking chair in the garage during the warmer weather. His garage was truly one of his favorite places to spend time, drink coffee and catch up with neighbors or anyone else that happened to stop by to visit. Quick witted with a great sense of humor, Joe was known for his quirky sayings, funny stories and ability to carry on a conversation with just about anyone on any subject. An avid hockey fan, Joe rarely missed a Massena Central or St Lawrence University game. He enjoyed spending time with his large circle of friends, his family, and especially with his three grandchildren.

He was a past member of the Massena American Legion Post No. 79, a member of the AMVETS Post No. 4, the VFW Post No. 1143 and the ALCOA 25-Year Club.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Beatrice; his daughters and son-in-law’s, Shaylyn and Randy Frederick of Massena, Julie and Michael Hurlbut of Louisville along with his three grandchildren who were his absolute pride & joy; Taylor Frederick, Jacob & Emily Hurlbut. Joe is also survived by his sisters; Mary Ann “Vivian” Loomes of Massena, Donna Dudley of Fairfield Glade, TN and Yvonne Verville of Plattsburgh, NY and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother Joseph “Hank” Verville and sisters; Rose Leroux, Jeannine Peck, Louise White and Theresa Otis.

Joe had a special place in his heart for his own dogs as well as his grand dogs over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Massena Humane Society; P.O. Box 145, Massena, New York 13662.
