CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - After a few delays, the Skating Saints of St. Lawrence University finally opened their 2020-21 season and ECAC play Thursday afternoon at Appleton Arena, where they played host to Quinnipiac.
It wouldn’t take the Saints long to get on the board. Less than four minutes in, Greg Lapointe gets loose in front of the net and buries the one-timer. St. Lawrence up 1-0 after one period.
Second period, Quinnipiac with five power plays, but Saints’ goalie Emil Zetterquist with some big stops to keep the saints up 1 heading into the third period.
Third period, Quinnipiac ties it when Odeen Tufto gets loose in front and splits the pipes, tying the game at 1.
The Saints regain the lead midway through the third when Cameron Buhl gets the redirect on the doorstep: 2-1 Saints
With under three minutes left -- Quinnipiac with the extra man -- Ty Smilianic finds the mark, knotting the score at 2.
That’s the way this one ends after a scoreless overtime. In the shootout, Tufto goes 5 hole for the score, giving Quinnipiac the extra point.
“But I thought the performance overall was solid,” Saints coach Brent Brekke said. You know, it’s one of those that you look back at some of the puck management and just some of the discipline we had, or lack of discipline more so, when the second period we gave up a bunch of power plays that’s -- those things are correctable and you know, if you want to be a great team you gotta take control of those things.”
