Sunday Sports: SLU and Clarkson both hit the ice for ECAC play

HAMDEN, C.T. (WWNY) -The St. Lawrence Men’s Hockey Team hit the road Sunday afternoon, traveling to Hamden, Connecticut to face 12th ranked Quinnipiac in an ECAC contest.

The Saints were looking for their first win of the season after opening with a 2 all tie against Quinnipiac on New Year’s Eve.

Less than 2 minutes in, the Saints get on the scoreboard when Jordan Steinmetz dents the back of the net on the doorstep. Score: 1-0 St. Lawrence.

Later in the 1st, the Saints added to their lead when Greg Lapointe goes in all alone and splits the pipes. 2-0 Saints after 1 period.

Late in the 3rd, the Saints are up 2-1. It was Quinnipiac with an extra attacker when Ashton Fry scores the empty netter. The Saints increase their lead to 3-1.

Quinnipiac makes it interesting, with 1:04 left Zach Metsa scores with the extra attacker, cutting the Saints lead to 3-2.

But 12 seconds later, Justin Paul adds the empty netter for the Saints, putting St. Lawrence in front 4-2.

Meantime at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, the Clarkson Golden Knights hosted Colgate in another ECAC contest.

There was only 1 goal in the 1st period when Grant Cooper tickles twine for the Golden Knights.

That’s the way the scores stayed until midway through the 3rd when Nick Anderson sticks home the loose puck, tying the game at 1.

That’s the way this game ends in overtime.

But in the shootout for the extra point, Alex Young connects, giving the Red Raiders the extra point.
