Lightfoot out, Sheridan in as SLC Legislature chair

New St. Lawrence County Legislature chair

CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - There’s a changing of the guard on St. Lawrence County’s Board of Legislators.

After a 9-6 vote at Monday night’s reorganizational meeting, Republican Bill Sheridan has been named the board’s new chairman.

Sheridan takes over for Joe Lightfoot.

Sources told 7 News earlier in the day the change is due to the county’s decision to table a vote on a sales tax agreement with the city of Ogdesnburg, one that’s been negotiated for more than a year.

Lightfoot was one of the eight legislators who voted to table the sales tax vote in December.

Ogdensburg Mayor Mike Skelly, who has a vested interest in that sales tax split, says a change in chairmanship was needed.

“He was not consistent with saying that Ogdensburg was always getting too much money for the last year,” Skelly said, “then changing his story to, well we need to table, because who knows what will happen to the county’s budget if we go ahead.”

Lightfoot says he’s trying to do what’s right for the county and will continue to do that.

He says if it upsets Skelly, “so be it.”

Lightfoot also says he’s happy Sheridan is succeeding him and says the new chairman will do a good job for the county.
