WWNY COVID claims life of local Catholic priest

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - COVID-19 has claimed the life of a Catholic priest in Jefferson County.

Father Vicente Jazmines passed away Thursday at age 76 at Samaritan Medical Center, according to Diocese of Ogdensburg officials.

Father Vince, as he was known, had been pastoring at St. Mary’s Church in Evans Mills and St. Paul’s Church in Black River.

Another priest, Father Christopher Looby, who’s pastor at a church in Ticonderoga, remembered Father Vince extending back to their days at Wadhams Hall Seminary near Ogdensburg.

“He was just a wonderful man. Always happy all the time. He always had a smile on his face, great sense of humor, but what I remember most about Father Vince is that he was a very holy man, very dedicated priest,” said Father Looby.

The diocese says there will be reception of the body and a funeral mass, but details are not being released publicly because of the pandemic.

Diocese officials say Father David DeLuca, a priest with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, will be filling in at the Evans Mills and Black River churches.
