LISBON, N.Y. (WWNY) - Two people are homeless after fire heavily damaged their home in St. Lawrence County overnight.
Shorty before 2 a.m., firefighters from several departments were called to 884 Pray Road in the town of Lisbon.
Volunteers arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.
Lisbon Fire Chief Cory Kroeger said he believed the two people inside were awakened by smoke alarms. He said they escaped the burning home without injury and are now staying with family.
He said two cats died in the blaze.
The chief said investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of the fire, but it appears a faulty coal stove may be to blame.
Volunteers from Lisbon, Heuvelton, Morristown, Morley and Waddington responded to the scene.
