WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - We’re sad to announce that 7 News has lost one of its family members.
Jeff Shannon, a WWNY-TV employee for more than 32 years, died Wednesday morning from complications of COVID-19.
“Jeff embodied the Channel 7 spirit,” said General Manager Eric Krebs. “Jeff’s contributions to the station were vital to our operations and he was a man who truly embodied Channel 7′s commitment to the community. He was a devoted husband, dad, co-worker and friend. He will be dearly missed.”
Jeff loved all things communications and media. Over the course of his long career, he did nearly every job you could do at a TV station. He helped with ice storm coverage in 1998, regularly directed newscasts, led our promotions efforts for many years, and was most recently in charge of master control, which is the department that keeps us on the air.
Jeff loved to laugh, he loved to joke, and he loved sharing what we do at WWNY-TV with the rest of the north country. He’d host tours of our news studio, you’d regularly see him at 7 News sponsored events, and he was always first to volunteer to represent our station at job fairs.
And of course, there was his voice.
If you’ve ever giggled while watching a commercial for “Super Science Saturday” at JCC, or tuned into Z93, you heard Jeff’s unmistakable voice. Upbeat. Packed full of energy.
We’re going to miss his voice. We’re going to miss his stories about meeting famous people at work conferences. We’re going to miss his triangle playing in the 7 News holiday band.
We’re going to miss him. So much.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Donna, and his children, Jordan and Brittany.
Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.
A complete obituary will follow in the coming days.
